Priyanka (name changed) is a young girl from a financially challenged family background. Her parents are daily wage earners. Originally from Dindigul District, her family migrated to Coimbatore District several years ago in search of better livelihood opportunities. After their relocation, Priyanka continued her education in Coimbatore and was enrolled in a local school.
During her Class 10 studies, Priyanka faced several academic difficulties and gradually lost interest in education. Due to her struggles in studies and lack of motivation, she discontinued her schooling and remained out of school for nearly six months. This period created a serious risk of permanent school dropout and affected her future educational opportunities.
To address school dropout among children in Sathya Nagar area, Don Bosco Anbu Illam had been conducting an Evening Study Centre as part of its child protection and educational support initiatives. Through regular interaction with children and families in the locality, the staff identified Priyanka’s situation and took steps to bring her back into the education system.
Mr. Josin, Staff and In-charge of the Sathya Nagar Evening Study Centre, personally approached the Headmistress-cum-Incharge CEO of Ashokapuram Model High School, Mrs. Rajalakshmi, and requested her support to re-enrol Priyanka in the same school where she had previously studied. With the encouragement, motivation, and counselling provided by the Don Bosco Anbu Illam team, Priyanka regained confidence and developed interest in continuing her education.
With continuous support and guidance, Priyanka started attending school regularly and appeared for the Class 10 Board Examination. Though she secured only 220 marks out of 500, her achievement was significant as she had overcome the challenge of returning to education after a long break.
Understanding Priyanka’s learning difficulties and considering her future career prospects, Don Bosco Anbu Illam continued to accompany and support her. Through the dedicated efforts of Mr. Josin, she received admission to the Women’s Industrial Training Institute (ITI), Gounder Mills, Coimbatore District, in the Computer Instrumentation course.
The Tamil Nadu Government supports girls pursuing ITI education by providing a monthly stipend of Rs. 1,000 and a laptop facility to assist their studies. This opportunity has opened a new pathway for Priyanka to gain technical skills, improve her employability, and build a secure future.
Priyanka’s journey reflects the importance of timely intervention, motivation, educational support, and continuous accompaniment. The efforts of Don Bosco Anbu Illam have helped a vulnerable child overcome the risk of school dropout and move towards a brighter and more empowered future.
